Responsibilities of the Fire & Rescue Service

Updated February 21, 2017

The fire and rescue service plays a vital role in the safety and well being of a community. Fire and rescue service workers are responsible for educating community members and schools about fire prevention, for putting out fires when they do arise and, increasingly, they play a role in the clean up and protection of the environment.

Fire Prevention

Increasing community awareness about basic safety precautions that eliminate the risk of fires is something that the fire and rescue service takes seriously. The fire and rescue service is often found in schools and at community events where they educate students and community members about the importance of smoke detectors and how to properly operate them, inform people about precautions such as making sure that electric appliances are off and unplugged, that outlets and cords are properly stored, and making sure that people know what to do in case of a fire.

Fire Extinguishing

When you think of the responsibilities of the fire and rescue service, extinguishing fires is often the first thing that comes to mind. In spite of all of the fire safety promotional campaigns, fires do still happen, and when they do it falls on the fire and rescue committee to extinguish the fires. Also at this time, the fire and rescue service workers will secure the area, rescue any individuals that are trapped by the fire and provide first aid and treatment to anyone that has been hurt.

Hazardous Waste Cleanup

The fire and rescue service is also called upon to assist with the clean up of hazardous waste spills. In these incidences, the fire and rescue service helps to protect individuals and the environment from exposure to the hazardous waste by helping to clean up the area and secure the perimeter. If someone has been exposed to a hazardous waste material, a fire and rescue service employee may be called upon to assist in the decontamination of the individual.
