A small, select group of major publishing houses are responsible for putting out most of the books in the best-seller aisle of your local bookstore. These top publishing houses cover most areas of fiction and nonfiction and handle an array of imprint publishing houses that publish books under their supervision. If you are an author looking to break into the publishing world, these top companies will probably not welcome you with open arms. While they are the best, they are also next to impossible for a new author to become a part of without a literary agent.
Founded in 1925, Random House is the largest English language publishing company in the world. It is an umbrella company that houses many smaller publishing branches under its name, including Doubleday and Crown Publishing. Random House does not accept e-mail submissions of manuscripts and suggests that new authors obtain a literary agent to represent them. Random House publishes all major literary fiction and nonfiction genres, including romance, young adult, historical fiction/nonfiction, and true crime.
