How to repair a bernina speed regulator foot pedal

When your Bernina speed regulator foot pedal starts running fast or slow, it could just need cleaning. On the other hand, the problem may be the capacitor or the PCB (printed circuit board). If you think you need to replace your Bernina speed regulator foot pedal, consider repairing it yourself before taking it to the shop. With just a little bit of basic electronic knowledge, you may be able to save yourself a lot of money.

  1. Unplug your Bernina sewing machine.

  2. Use a flathead screwdriver to pry the base off the foot pedal at the pivot points.

  3. Take note of the internal mechanism. Make sure you know where springs and other components go and how they are installed before going further.

  4. Use a lint brush or small toothbrush to gently clean away any dust and dirt that may have gathered inside the housing of your Bernina Speed Regulator Foot Pedal.

  5. Return the spring and other parts inside the foot pedal to their original positions.

  6. Hold the pivot end of the Bernina Speed Regulator Foot Pedal with one hand and snap the base back in place.

  19. Remove the capacitor and inspect it. The capacitor looks a little like a battery.

  21. Purchase a new capacitor that meets the exact specifications of the old one. It is best to take the old one to a reputable dealer, who will be able to match your specific needs.

  22. Replace the worn capacitor and follow the instructions in Step 1 above to reassemble your Bernina Speed Regulated Foot Pedal.
