How to Test the PTO Switch on a Cub Cadet

Updated February 21, 2017

Cub Cadet builds lawn tractors that have anywhere from a 40-inch to a 50-inch deck. This large deck is designed to cut large fields of grass. The PTO switch controls the blade cutting mechanism. To test it, all you have to do is turn the lawn tractor on and push the PTO switch. This will engage the blades.

  1. Sit on the tractor.

  2. Place the Cub Cadet tractor key into the ignition.

  3. Push the PTO switch into the "Off" position. Lawn tractors will not turn on if the PTO switch is in the "On" position.

  4. Move the parking brake into the "Engaged" position.

  5. Push the throttle into the "Fast" position and pull the choke button towards yourself.

  6. Turn the ignition to the "Start" position. Once you hear the engine turn on, let go of the key. Hold in the brake lever with your foot.

  7. Push the PTO switch towards you. This will now engage the blades if the PTO is working correctly.
