How to Give Used Sporting Equipment to Charity

Updated April 17, 2017

Instead of just storing used sporting equipment in the garage or leaving it to remain unused, it could be a better alternative to donate the equipment to charity. The equipment might help another person to live a more active and healthier lifestyle. There are many ways to donate used sporting equipment to charity, and you should choose a cause that seems the most noble to you.

  1. Gather all of your used sporting equipment that you want to donate and clean it thoroughly.

  2. Call Goodwill or the Salvation Army if you are interested in doing a general donation. Ask them about their donation procedures.

  3. Get in touch with the local Boys and Girls Club to find out if they need sporting equipment. In order to find a club near you, look in your local phone book or online.

  4. Visit the I Love Schools website if you want to see lists of specific items that are needed by local schools. Access the "Teacher's Wish List" provided on the website and fill in the search form.

  5. Get in touch with Sports Gift, Inc. to donate your used sports equipments to underprivileged children all over the world. Visit the website and click on "Donate Sports Equipment" to go through the list of items needed. Ship the items to Sports Gift, 32545 B Golden Lantern, #478, Dana Point, CA 92629 or drop them off at the Laguna Hills office at 26072 Merit Circle, Suite 121, Laguna Hills, CA 92653.

  6. Place a free ad on The Freecycle Network to donate locally. Access the "Browse Groups" link on the website and enter your city and state to find a local group's home page. Place an ad for the items that you want to donate by signing up for a free membership on the website. If you find an interested party, simply coordinate a pickup time for the items.

  7. Tip

For tax write-off purposes, make sure that you receive a dated receipt. It has to be signed, dated and list the items that were donated along with their estimated values.
