Many choices in floor coverings are available. One option is to apply wallpaper to your floor. This option allows you to choose from an almost endless supply of patterns and colours. Applying wallpaper to your floor requires removing the baseboards and existing flooring from the room, leaving the subflooring exposed. It is necessary to create a flat, solid floor so that your wallpaper will adhere to the surface and be as smooth as possible. Sealing the wallpaper with a few thick coats of sealer afterward will protect it from damage.
Sweep the floor with your broom to remove all dirt and debris from the work area. Fill your mop bucket with clean water and mop the floor with a damp mop. Rinse and wring out your mop periodically to keep it clean. Allow the floor to dry completely. Fill the gaps between the plywood subflooring boards with caulk from your caulk gun. Let the caulk cure for 12 hours.
Apply three coats of polyurethane to the entire floor with your paintbrush. Make each coat as thick and smooth as possible. Allow each coat to dry for three hours before the next application.
Unroll the wallpaper on the floor. Cut the paper as necessary with your razor knife. Arrange the paper so that it is 5½ inches away from the wall. Lift the paper and apply a 1/8-inch coat of adhesive to the area to be covered. Lay the paper onto the adhesive and press the paper into place with your wooden wallpaper roller. Cover the floor with wallpaper. Take your time, line up the designs as desired and maintain your 5½-inch border between the paper and the walls. Allow the adhesive to dry for 12 hours.
Cover the 5½-inch gap between the paper and walls with wallpaper border. Lay the border paper dry, overlapping the outer ½ inch of the wallpaper. Cut the border paper to fit with your razor knife. Apply adhesive to the subflooring, lay the border paper and press the paper to the floor with your roller to complete the coverage. Allow 12 hours for the adhesive to dry.
Apply three smooth, thick coats of polyurethane on top of the wallpaper. Allow each coat of polyurethane to dry for three hours before applying the next coat. Allow the final coat to dry for 12 hours before walking on your new floor and reinstalling the baseboards.
