How to Use a UK Laptop in the USA

Updated July 20, 2017

Laptops work the same way, regardless of where in the world you are. The only thing you need to worry about when using a U.K. laptop in the United States is the AC adaptor. Power flows from U.S. outlets at between 110 and 120 volts while European outlets put out 220 to 240 volts. You will need an adaptor set that can plug a U.K. power adaptor into a U.S. power outlet.

  1. Buy a U.S. conversion adaptor that can plug into the end of the cord on your U.K. AC adaptor. These types of devices can be found at many electronics retailers and online electronics outlets.

  2. Plug the conversion adaptor into the end of the AC adaptor plug for your laptop. The end of the conversion adaptor will either be two-prongs or three-prongs.

  3. Plug the AC adaptor, now fitted with the conversion adaptor, into a wall outlet or power strip.
