How do I get my headphones to work on my computer?

Updated February 21, 2017

If you want to listen to the audio from your computer over headphones instead of a speaker system, you can connect the headphones to your computer. When headphones are connected to a computer, the speakers become quiet and all of the audio plays only through the headphones. Even if you don't have a headphone port on the computer, you can plug the headphones into the speaker port.

  1. Look at the front of your computer. Most computers have a headphone port positioned on the front of the computer display (this holds true for laptop computers). However, if you don't have a headphone port, remove the speaker cable running into the speaker port on the back of the computer.

  2. Plug the headphone jack into the headphone port (or the speaker port). Push the jack completely in to ensure a secure cable connection.

  3. Double-click the speaker icon in the lower-right corner of the desktop. This launches the volume control window.

  4. Remove the check next to all of the volume control windows.

  5. Play the audio content you want to listen to. You can now hear the audio play over the headphones you have connected to the computer.
