How to Dispose of Cordless Phones & Their Bases

Updated March 23, 2017

Due to the increased use of cell phones, cordless landline phones are becoming more of a rarity in American homes. If you opt to recycle your old cordless phone in lieu of throwing it in your garbage can, you'll be doing your part to eliminate unnecessary waste. Materials used to manufacture your old cordless phone and its base may be recycled to create new products. Donating your cordless phone may provide you with an equally rewarding disposal option.

  1. Recycle your old cordless phone. Companies like Barclay Enterprises will enable you to dispose of your cordless phone and base in an environmentally friendly manner. Depending on the recycler you choose, you may be able to drop your cordless phone off in person at an authorised recycling centre. Otherwise, you'll be required to ship your old phone to the destination indicated by your recycler. Prior to shipping your cordless phone, you may have to provide information such as the make and model, and approximate shipping weight. In some instances, you may be able to ship your cordless phone to a recycler free of charge.

  2. Donate your cordless phone to charity. There are many charitable organisations such as Goodwill and the Salvation Army that will happily accept your cordless phone donation. In addition, you may opt to donate your old cordless phone to schools and other non-profit organisations. When donating your cordless phone and base, clean any visible dirt or dust off as a courtesy. Never donate a cordless phone that isn't in proper working condition. Include the base, and any other items that were included when you purchased your phone.

  3. Sell your cordless phone on eBay or Craigslist. If you're looking to profit by selling your old cordless phone, post a classified ad on Craigslist. If you decide to sell your old phone on eBay, you'll be able to set a "buy it now" price, or sell your phone to the highest bidder. Provide an accurate description of your phone, and take pictures of all its components. This allows potential buyers to make an informed buying decision. If all else fails, consider selling your old cordless phone at a garage or yard sale.

  4. Tip

Use websites like www.earth911.org to locate a recycler near your home. Many electronics manufacturers and large retail chains have their own recycling programs for the acceptance of old or outdated electronics.
