  • The majority of carpet fresheners found in your local department store are often expensive and full of harsh chemicals and synthetic perfumes.
  • With the light fresh smell of baby powder and your favorite essential oil, your house will be smelling great in no time.

Measure 1 1/2 cups of baby powder, 1/2 cup of borax and 2 tbsp. of baking soda in a medium bowl.

Add 15 drops of essential oil to the bowl. You may use one oil, or a combination of essential oils. Choose your favorite scent or select specific oils for their affects, for example a combination of eucalyptus and ylang ylang will deter fleas, lavender has a calming affect and cardamom and patchouli are natural aphrodisiacs. Vanilla, lemon and rose are other popular scents for carpet freshener.

Stir the ingredients, mashing clumps formed by the oil with a fork. Combine the ingredients well until the essential oil is thoroughly mixed in. Place the powder in a storage container, and it is ready to use. Be sure your storage container has a tight fitting lid, both to keep the powder dry and preserve the aroma of the oils.

Shake the baby powder freshener evenly over your carpet. Allow the powder to set for up to 24 hours before vacuuming thoroughly.

TIP

A bit of your baking soda carpet freshener will deter ants as well. Shake the baking soda mixture off of a large spoon or use an old powder bottle to distribute your carpet freshener.
