What is the Best Plant Food for Geraniums?

Updated June 16, 2017

Geraniums are well-loved flowering annuals--plants that live for only one bloom season. Many gardeners start the seeds indoors and then transfer the plants outside when the weather is warmer. Others keep the plants in the pot for the life of the plant.

Start your geraniums indoors, using potting soil with peat moss at the bottom of the container. If you keep your geraniums potted, use an all-purpose liquid plant food every two weeks.

Transfer your geraniums outdoors after the last frost of the season and after the soil has warmed. Transfer the plant soil and all to your garden bed or repot if necessary.

Fertiliser is plant food for outdoor plants. Fertilise your geraniums at least once a month, if not biweekly. Use a water-soluble fertiliser, such as 15-30-15.

Many people are making compost for plant food these days. Allow plant based wastes to decompose for a nutrient-rich compound that your geraniums will love.

Geraniums needs lots of water. Make sure you water outdoor plants regularly. For indoor geraniums, water when the top 2 inches of soil feels dry.

Healthy geraniums require six to eight hours of sunlight a day. Outdoor geraniums should be planted in full sunlight, except in hot areas, where they can be planted in partial shade. Indoor geraniums need just as much light.
