How to Replace a Power Mirror in a VW Jetta

The Volkswagen Jetta has a complex power mirror construction for all model years. This project is for an experienced do-it-yourself repair person. It only requires a few basic tools.

Instructions

  1. 1

    Disconnect the negative battery cable before you take the front door trim panel off the Jetta's door.

    Remove all screws and clips and carefully pry the panel from the door with a trim tool purchased from an auto repair store.

    Detach the power mirror electrical wire connector located under the door panel.

  4. 4

    Take off the triangle interior cover and the insulation inside the interior cover. Remove three nuts from the power mirror.

    Pull the outside rear view mirror off, and guide the power wire through the hole in the door.

    Replace the old mirror with the new one by first pushing the new wiring through the hole in the door.

    Install and tighten the three retaining nuts you took off when removing the old mirror.

    Connect the power mirror wiring to the connection located on the door panel. Reconnect the insulation piece and install the triangle interior cover.

    Put the front door trim panel back in place by securing all clips and tightening all screws.

  5. 5

    Connect the Volkswagen Jetta's battery cable.

Tips and warnings

  • Reconnect the battery and test the power mirror before completely tightening down the door trim panel to make sure it works.
  • It's vital to remember to disconnect the car's battery before starting the job to avoid injury.
  • Don't attempt to free-up the Jetta mirror by pressing on the glass. Outside mirrors that are frozen must be thawed prior to adjustment.
