Wedding card boxes are a feature of most American weddings, as giving the bride and groom a gift of cash on their special day has become more and more popular over the years. Traditionally, wedding card boxes have been plain white rectangular-shaped boxes with an envelope slit at the top. However, with some creativity, a beautiful wedding card box can be decorated with little effort.

Decorating With Fabric

There is an element of fabric that conveys richness and luxury, so if this is the type of atmosphere you'd like to have at your wedding, decorating your wedding card box in fabric is a good option. You can choose to stick with traditional white as your fabric colour or choose a colour that corresponds with your theme or colour scheme. Choose a fabric such as velvet or brocade, depending on your wedding season. It is not necessary to sew the fabric; simply swathe the box in it.

Decorating With Embellishments

Decorating a wedding card box with embellishments is a creative option for someone who likes do-it-yourself projects and crafts. In this case, you have two options. You may choose to purchase a wedding card box in a colour of your choice that is already somewhat decorative and add gems, stones, crystals and other embellishments. Alternatively, purchase a plain wood box (available at any local craft store) and cover it completely with embellishments. The latter choice is more opulent, so consider the atmosphere of your wedding when making your choice.

Decorating With Collage

Decorating a wedding card box with a collage of photos and mementos of the bride and groom is a meaningful idea. The couple can work on the project themselves in anticipation of their big day, or the card box can be made by a friend and presented as a thoughtful gift. Start with a large, plain wooden box and glue photos, cards, movie stubs, concert tickets and other keepsakes onto it. Cover with a clear glue glaze and cut a hole in the top for envelopes.

Novelty Decorating

If the tone of your wedding is less formal, consider having a novelty card box made or making one yourself. There are a number of ideas to choose from when creating a novelty card box. Consider having a card box made in the shape of something meaningful yet humorous to the bride and groom, such as a giant fish if the groom likes fishing. Or, decorate the box in novelty items, like shopping receipts if the bride is a shopaholic, or seashells if the couple took a memorable trip to the ocean.
