In the United States, the Food and Drug Administration requires all employees who work with food that is sold to the public wear hair restraints. This applies to everyone who prepares and handles food but not waiters or counter staff. There are a variety of hair nets for every length of hair. FDA accepted hair nets are readily available for purchase over the Internet or in restaurant supply stores.
Purpose of Hair Nets
This food code exists to prevent hair from coming into contact with food and kitchen equipment. It is especially important for those with long hair. Hair nets keep hair off your face and out of the way while you work. If you have any contact with unpacked food or any surface that food will touch, you are required by law to wear a hair restraint. Whether you are purchasing hair nets for yourself or for your employees, make sure that they meet FDA approval. The manufacturer will specifically state that the hair restraints are FDA accepted. Disposable hair nets are available for purchase in white, black or brown.
Any hair net will entirely cover your hairline around the scalp. The elastic around the net should be sufficient to keep it in place. Hair pins or hair clips can be used if you find that the hair net slips back or off your head. If your hair length falls below your shoulders, choose a larger size. A smaller size hair net is more convenient for those with shorter styles. All hair nets are made of loosely woven material that is extremely lightweight. If you have extremely long hair, use barrettes or a ponytail to make it easier to tuck hair inside the net. The colour chosen depends entirely on how discreet you want your hair net to be. White hair nets are visible at a glance. This may be an advantage if part of your job description is to check code compliance, or you wish to have the hair net readily seen. Black and brown hair nets blend in well with natural hair colour.
