There's nothing quite like relaxing on a comfortable sofa, but a reclining sofa offers the extra comfort of literally being able to put your feet up. Like traditional sofas and loveseats, reclining sofas offer many features that homeowners should consider before making a purchase that best suits their needs.

Size

Reclining sofas available through retail outlets come in either a full-size or a loveseat-size sofa. Full-size sofas measure up to 2.34 m (92 inches) long, and loveseat sofas measure up to 1.73 m (68 inches). Homeowners also may elect to have a reclining sofa custom-made to occupy a specific-size space. Whether the piece is being purchased or custom-made, you must take accurate measurements to ensure that the furniture will fit into the desired space. When planning for a recliner sofa, be sure to allow for additional clearance if it will be placed near a wall. This will allow for full reclining.

Construction

Reclining sofas are designed with a reclining mechanism at either one end or both ends of the sofa. The furniture reclines with either a manual or power mechanism. Manual recliners operate with a lever or handle, and power recliners move at the push of a button. Well-crafted reclining sofas feature a thick footrest.

Fabric and colours

Reclining sofas are covered in a wide range of fabrics, including leather, suede and microfibre material. Consider the amount of use your recliner sofa will receive before choosing a fabric. Leather, for example, offers comfort and a warm, rich look but does not hold up well to wear and tear from pets, which may scratch or cut the surface. For households with young children, a fabric that can be stain-treated may present the best option. While leather is available only in solid colours, other fabrics offer prints, patterns and a wider range of colour.

Options

In addition to the reclining mechanism, some reclining sofas feature movement, such as massage, and gliding that mimics a swing. Other options include heating pads, storage cubbies and laptop outlets built into the sofa, as well as a very popular feature: cup holders in a centre console.
