Fifty may be the new 40. But whatever decade it lines up with, it is a time when a lot of women begin recovering parts of themselves they set aside for marriage, career and child rearing. It is a decade when a lot of women begin to dust off old desires, hobbies and passions. Someone who is paying attention should be able to find a treasure of a gift at any price.

A Trip

Is there a place she's always wanted to go? Paris or Rome? Or a weekend in New York City or Las Vegas? A trip will make for a birthday she'll never forget. It's a great way to mark a life passage, as well.

An Experience

For the adventurous woman, jumping out of an aeroplane or whitewater rafting could be a great gift. A balloon ride is an adventure that doesn't risk life and limb. Or on the opposite end of the spectrum, you could give the birthday girl a day at a posh spa or a shopping day, complete with lunch at a fancy restaurant. A night at the ballet might be something she's always wanted to try. She might prefer to go alone, or it might be more fun with a friend or spouse.

A Coveted Object

In the old days, furs and diamonds were the proper gifts to mark a woman's coming up in the world. But coveted objects can range from sports cars to French copper cooking ware. If she's been thinking of taking up the violin or painting, providing the tools for this might be just the ticket.

Books and Movies

On the less expensive end, there are many books and movies that celebrate older women. Elizabeth Gilbert's "Eat, Pray, Love" both the book and the movie, encourage women to experience their dreams. Movies like "Something's Gotta Give" with Diane Keaton, "The Swimming Pool" with Charlotte Rampling, and "Calendar Girls" with Helen Mirren celebrate the older woman. Then there's "Sex and the Seasoned Woman" by Gail Sheehy and "Younger Next Year for Women: Live Like You're 50--Strong, Fit, and Sexy Until You're 80 and Beyond" by Chris Crowley and Dr. Henry S. Lodge.
