Personalized Gifts for Sailors
Find a perfect gift for the sailor in your life. (sailboat image by pearlguy from

If you know a sailor about to go cruising or want to give them a gift for a birthday, holiday or as a thank you, you may want to find something that lets them know you understand how much their time on the water means to them. If you're not a sailor yourself, you may be at a loss for what they want or need, but with a little creative thinking you can find a personal gift that they'll treasure.

If you're celebrating the maiden voyage of a new sailboat, consider purchasing a traditional bottle of bubbly to break over the bow. You might consider getting two bottles -- one for breaking and one for keeping. You can even purchase sparkling white wine with a personalised label or perhaps with a photo of the boat on it.

Marina Gift Cards

If you're buying for a sailor about to go cruising, they have likely already purchased all the necessities for the trip. If they're cruising in the United States, get a copy of their intended route and investigate local marinas where they plan to stop. Ask if you can purchase a gift card for your sailor friends. These cards are an ideal way for them to purchase fuel, sundries, or even have laundry privileges along the way.

Knit a Gift

A popular scarf, called the mariner's scarf, is intended for sailors. If you knit, this is an ideal -- and easy -- gift. The neck is ribbed to block the wind, while the ends lie flat under a jacket out of the way of lines and wheels. The Seamen's Church Institute offers the pattern as a free PDF download. This site also has other patterns suited for sailors.

Personalised Jacket

Companies like Land's End offer personalisation of many items, including their outerwear. Even Florida sailors get bone-achingly cold in the winter, and a well-made jacket that's water and wind proof helps a lot. Add a "Captain" before their name on the embroidery for extra points.

Consider getting a custom flag made for the sailor's sailboat. If you're not a sailor yourself, talk to other sailors for an idea of what the sailor you're buying for would like on a pennant or flag.
