Curtains and similar window coverings are some of the most versatile elements of home decor, as they can fit any decorative theme or formality. Not only do curtains add personality and style to a room, but they also help control light, regulate temperature and provide extra privacy. Hanging your curtains in a unique, unusual or interesting way will make your windows tie in with the rest of your decor and will make the room more visually pleasing.

Decorative Hooks

Instead of hanging your curtains directly onto the rod, consider hanging them using decorative hooks with embellishments. You can easily use plain wooden coat hooks to attach panel curtains to a curtain rod and can decorate the hooks in a number of interesting ways. For a flirty, feminine look, consider attaching silk flowers to the hooks using a hot-glue gun. Fabric bows, craft gems, cameos and other embellishments can also be used to give your curtain hooks a unique look.

Two-Toned Panels

Combining two colours of the same style of curtain will give your windows an interesting look. This look is particularly appropriate if you have a two-toned colour scheme in the room. For example, purchase the same style of curtain in blue and white. Place the blue curtains on the outside ends of the rod and the white curtains in the centre. Because the curtains are the same style, they will still look coordinated and the two-tones will stand out against the window.

Ceiling Level

Instead of hanging the curtains from a rod directly above the window, consider hanging them at ceiling level for a more flowing, visually interesting effect. Install two hooks in the ceiling at each end above the window, and use a turnbuckle to tighten a piece of aircraft cable between the two hooks. Use rope clips to hold the cable ends in place. Simply hang the curtains from the cable as you would hang them from the rod.

Clothespins

For a country, shabby chic look, clothespins can easily be used to hang your window coverings in a unique way. Install one hook on each end of the window directly above the top of the frame. Use a turnbuckle to tighten a piece of aircraft cable between the two hooks, and use rope clips to hold the end of the cable in place. The cable will act as a sort of clothesline, and you simply pin the curtains to the line using the clothespins.
