Festival Birthday Party Ideas

Updated November 21, 2016

Hosting a birthday festival makes your celebrant feel special. Festivals are an opportunity for people to gather together and enjoy each other's company as they celebrate. What better reason is there to celebrate than a loved one's birthday? With a theme, some decorations, food and friends, you can make any birthday a festival. Choose a theme that reflects the interests of the guest of honour and have fun planning it.

Mardi Gras

Mardi Gras is one of the biggest festivals in the country, and is filled with parades, laughter and glittering decorations. Beads are always an appropriate decoration and can be hung in trees, on walls or used like streamers all around your party area. Traditional Mardi Gras colours are purple, green and gold; display table coverings or balloons in those colours to add to the festival air. Hang Mardi Gras masks on the walls or pass them out to guests, and you've got a festive space for your festival birthday. Foods for Mardi Gras-themed parties can range from a traditional crayfish boil, gumbo and jambalaya to simple fried chicken, barbecue or grill foods.

Wine Festival

A wine festival is the perfect celebration for a group of adults, as it offers attendees the chance to socialise and interact in a sophisticated party atmosphere. Enjoy a friendly wine tasting, a fine meal paired with interesting wines and a relaxed social setting. Decorate with candles in glass or crystal holders, your birthday celebrant's favourite flowers and arrangements of fruit and cheese displayed in attractive bowls and containers. You can even use grapes to make a wine for the next year's celebration. As Alison Crowe at WineMaker magazine says, "Nothing feels as satisfying and authentic as making your first batch of wine from fresh grapes."

Film Festival

A film festival is an entertaining party theme that offers many options for decoration and activities. Between screening your celebrant's favourite films, you can host trivia games, play movie charades and serve movie-theatre snacks like popcorn, gummies and hot dogs. Decorate with film reels, clapboards or fake film streamers, as well as silver and black balloons. Your birthday cake can be decorated to look like a movie set or a film reel; arrange for a director's chair for your celebrant.

Music Festival

Turn your backyard into an outdoor concert for your celebrant. Play the birthday partier's favourite music, invite everyone to bring along an instrument or invite any musicians you know to play. Decorate with balloons and streamers and outdoor lighting for when it gets dark. Set up a buffet using foods that don't have to be kept cool, blow up a beach ball and set up the sprinklers if the weather's warm enough.
