Easter is the most important holiday in the Christian religion because it commemorates the central event in the New Testament of the bible: the death and resurrection of Christ. Christian parents and teachers can teach their preschool children and students about the significance of this event through hands-on learning experiences gained through artistic expression like craft work.

Easter Mobile

One simple craft activity for young children is to create a mobile signifying important aspects of the Easter story. Using a heavy paper plate, poke a small hole in the centre of the plate plus four additional holes equidistant from each other on the outer perimeter of the plate. Do not poke the holes too close to the edge; it may cause the plate to tear. Let the kids decorate the plate with crayons, marker or paint. Using some yarn, cut a piece 12 to 18 inches in length and tie a knot in one end. Thread the other end through the holes and attach it to a paper clip or a Christmas ornament hook.

Hang symbols of the Easter message from pieces of yarn that come down from each of the four outside holes. Examples can include a cross, donkey, palm leaf or any other Christian symbol. Once you have finished hang the mobile and enjoy.

Beaded Cross Necklace

A second simple craft for preschool children is a Christian cross necklace with beads. For this activity you need some leather shoelaces or string approximately 18 inches in length. You will also use a small wooden Christian cross with a hole drilled in the top of it that is just large enough to thread the string through. Thread the string through to create the basic part of the necklace. Use decorative beads to add to the necklace on either side of the cross. You can use a variety of colours, one colour or go with specific colour scheme of mixed colours.

Alternately, you can have the children paint the cross and thread it through the string once dry.

Tie the string when you are satisfied with the look and wear your creation.

Decorative Easter Basket

One way to integrate less-religious Easter ideas with Christian religious crafts is to create a decorative Easter basket using Christan symbols. You can purchase Easter baskets at a local retail store rather inexpensively and then use construction paper to decorate them with any number of different Christian symbols like the cross. As an alternative, have the children illustrate the construction paper with a scene from the Easter story. Glue the paper around the outside perimeter of the basket to create a storytelling Easter basket.
