During the Christmas season, whether you're a parent looking for a bonding activity for your family or you're an educator seeking activities for your children -- consider creating easy-to-make crafts and decorations for the holiday. These projects can be done together, can be used to teach about the holiday and provide a source of entertainment for adults and children alike.

Paper Garland

A garland made of paper is easy to create and can be used to decorate a Christmas tree or draped from window curtain rods. Cut strips of construction paper about one inch wide -- you can cut them thinner or wider, if you'd like. Create the first loop for the chain by bending the paper so that it forms a circle and secure the ends with tape or paste. Continue forming the chain by interlocking the next piece of paper around the first circle, creating another loop and secure that circle with tape or paste. Continue making interlocking loops in this fashion until you have a paper garland as long as you'd like. Red and green are the traditional Christmas colours, but you can use any coloured paper that you'd like.

Snowball Ornament

Make snowball ornaments to hang on a Christmas tree, to use as outdoor decorations or to hang anywhere in your home. Purchase foam balls, white or clear push pins, satin ribbon and glitter spray from a craft store. Any size foam ball will work for this project. Push the pins into the ball until it is completely covered. Once the push pins are inserted into the ball, cut a length of satin ribbon and form it into a loop. Use one of the push pins to secure it to the ball -- this will be used to hang the ornament. Complete the project by spraying it with glitter spray.

Jar Top Christmas Tree

Turn lids from jars into a Christmas tree. Gather a collection of lids from baby food, pasta sauce or any other type of jar -- make sure they lids are the same size. Thoroughly clean the lids. On a piece of poster board, glue the tops of the lids so that they form the shape of a Christmas tree -- start at the top of the tree with one lid, on the next bough of the tree use two lids and continue to build your tree in this fashion. Paint the inside of the lids green. Affix sequins, stickers or any other object that you think appropriate to decorate the tree. Cut the poster board around the tree. Glue a loop of satin ribbon to the top of the tree to hang the ornament.
