Happy 21st Birthday! (presents image by Horticulture from Fotolia.com)

Some view the 21st birthday as the start of adulthood. Some view it as the start of the party, since 21 is the legal drinking age in the United States. Either way, the 21st birthday is a momentous occasion, and the gift giver should consider that when selecting a present for the birthday boy.

Funny T-shirt

Plenty of T-shirts with witty phrases can be good choices for a guy turning 21. Among the options are "Finally Legal!" "Good-bye bouncer, Hello bartender" or a T-shirt with playing cards on it that reads "Go Ahead, Card Me." Most retailers specialising in T-shirts permit them to be customised and personalised.

Charity Donation

For the person with a strong sense of volunteerism or giving, a charity donation can be meaningful. Instead of making a donation to a charity of your choosing, you can choose the dollar amount and let the birthday boy choose the charity. Such donation cards can be done either through e-mail with a personalised birthday e-card or it can be sent in the mail with a traditional birthday card.

Birthday Survival Kit

This survival kit can be a funny gag gift for the 21-year-old party animal. You can vary the contents based on his interests in a homemade kit or purchase one of several varieties offered by retailers. Some ideas for possible items to include in a homemade kit are a bottle opener, a party permit hang tag for the rear view mirror, shot glasses, an ID holder or a hangover helper kit.

Home Brewery

For the beer drinker who likes brewing his own beer, a microbrewery or a home brewing kit would be a good birthday gift. Brewery kits include fermenting kegs with lids and a tap, empty bottles, labels and instructions on how to brew beer from home. Microbreweries are similar. They just require a person to add water to the mix that comes with the kit.
