The 8085 microprocessor integrated circuit chip was developed by Intel in 1976. Since then, it has undergone several upgrades, with different manufacturers now making the chip. It is an 8-bit chip, having 256 input and outputs. Being versatile, it is well-suited to drive various electronic circuits and robotic systems. In 2010, this chip is still widely available from electronic supply houses.

Solar Tracker

For a solar panel to operate at peak efficiency, it must be alperfectly to the sun. This is impossible to do with a stationary mounted panel, since the sun tracks across the sky from dawn to dusk. Engineering student Jyotirmay Gadewadikar explains a circuit designed to move a panel, using the 8085 chip and sensors to track the sun. Based upon the data gathered from the sensors, the 8085 moves the panel by controlling motors. The entire system lines up the panel to the sun continuously, as it tracks across the sky.

Plant Irrigator

An automated plant irrigator is possible, driven by a 8085 microprocessor. In this project, sensors are buried in the soil. When the soil dries out, the sensors trigger the microprocessor, which controls valves on the water supply. When the soil reaches a saturation level, the sensors again trigger the microprocessor to turn off the valves. For a farmer or a commercial grower, this is a huge time- and labour-saver. By programming a system to do the monitoring and watering, valuable time is freed up so the farmer can concentrate on other things.

Water-Level Controller

An automatic water-level controller for holding tanks can be built. A copper strip sensor is placed inside the water tank. When the water level is too low, the sensor sends a signal to the 8085 microprocessor, which activates a fill valve. When the water level reaches the top, the fill valve is closed by the circuitry. This is another time- and effort-saving device. An operator no longer has to manually check the level, since the microprocessor does this for her.

Customer Counter

An automated visitor or customer counter is another useful project. When a customer enters the door, the counter adds one to the total tally. When a customer leaves, it subtracts one. A running log can be kept of all the customers a shop has in one day. This is useful to a business owner. With the counter--using a 8085 microprocessor--keeping a running tab, the owner can identify peak customer times and schedule staff accordingly.
