Top Five Universities for Law in the UK

The top universities in the United Kingdom are home to the nation's top law schools as well. UK law schools have an international emphasis and reputation. The Times Online compiled a list of the best law schools in the UK in 2013, and five of those schools emerged as the clear leaders on their list.

University of Cambridge

The University of Cambridge houses the highest-ranked law school in the UK Cambridge is one of the leading law research institutions in the world. The university boasts several prominent research centres, such as the Centre for European Legal Studies. The law school offers degrees at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. Research degrees include the master of philosophy (M.Phil.), master of research (M.Litt.) and the doctor of philosophy (Ph.D.).

University of Oxford

The University of Oxford is the second-highest-rated law program in the U.K., according the Times Online. Oxford offers the U.K.'s biggest law program. Oxford, too, is well-respected as a research institution and numerous degree programs are available, including a bachelor of arts and bachelor of civil law degree at the undergraduate level. The school offers several different master's degrees including civil law and criminology. The university also offers a master of law and finance and a postmaster's certificate in intellectual property law.

London School of Economics and Political Science

The London School of Economics (LSE) was ranked third by the Times Online in 2008. LSE is known for its interdisciplinary approach to the study of law and its incorporation of legal education into various facets of the entire university curriculum. Degrees include the bachelor and master of laws, along with a master of philosophy and doctor of philosophy. The LSE law program focuses its research in the areas of international law, humanitarian law and financial law.

King's College London

The fourth-highest-rated law school in the U.K. is at King's College in London. Like the other prominent law schools in the nation, King's College also offers both undergraduate and graduate law programs. The college offers bachelor of law degrees in three-, four- and five-year formats. At the graduate level, King's College offers a master of law, master of arts (M.A.) and master of science (M.Sc.) degree. M.A. degrees include studies in criminology/criminal justice, human values and contemporary global ethics, and medical ethics and law. The master of science degree is in the field of construction law and dispute resolution.

University College London

University College London (UCL) is the No. 5 rated law program in the U.K., according to the 2008 Times Online rankings. UCL sponsors numerous research centres such as the Jevons Institute of Competition Law and Economics and offers numerous degree programs. It offers both the bachelor and master of laws degrees, as well as the master and doctor of philosophy degrees. The school specialises in 16 different areas of law, including environmental law and human rights law.
