A christening is the practice of baptising an infant, according to the Church of England. Different beliefs approach the ceremony in different ways. For some, the ritual is quite formal and elaborate. For others, it is a casual family celebration. Either way, it is a meaningful event that can be made even more special with decorations.

Brighten up the christening venue with some flowers. If the ceremony will be performed at a tall, standing basin of water, try placing a bouquet of flowers at the base of the basin. Choose tall flowers that will draw the eye upward, such as delphiniums. If the event will take place at an alter, choose a low, wide arrangement such as one that features ivy, baby's breath and roses. If you are also decorating for a party after the christening, use flowers for the centrepieces at the tables. White tulips are inexpensive, as are simple, pretty white daisies. White is the traditional colour for flowers at christenings, as it represents the innocence and purity of the baby. For that reason, christening gowns are also usually white.

Balloons lend a festive air to any event, although they are probably more appropriate for a christening party rather than the actual christening itself. Tie a bouquet of balloons to the cake table. Use white, silver and pink or blue, depending on the baby's gender. For a sweet touch, fill a small pram with balloons. Let several balloons float on the ceiling. Tie a bunch in a bouquet and add a ribbon bow, then attach it to the ends of each pew or row of chairs.

Assorted Decorations

Crepe paper streamers are beautiful when draped from pew to pew, especially if fastened with a small bouquet of flowers. Strands of white lights add a soft, cosy innocence to the venue. Alternatively, use an arrangement of white candles, perhaps accented with a standing cross, or a Bible (which could be a gift to the new baby) placed on a book stand.
