Gay Party Themes

Updated February 21, 2017

While your possibilities are endless when it comes to throwing a gay-themed party, consider using a theme that empowers lesbians and gays everywhere. Certain themes that celebrate the political strides gays have accomplished and the tremendous contributions they have made to art will truly honour these individuals and their community.

Gay Pride Theme

One of the staples of a gay pride party is gay pride flags hanging all over the venue, or one large banner displaying a flag. Arrange the table of refreshments separately by colour so that collectively they make up the colours of the gay pride rainbow. For example, place a big red bowl of punch at one end of the table. Next to it, place a large plate of orange slices or a large bowl of cheese puffs or orange chips. Next to that, position a large lemon cake or other yellow food. Continue in this manner with green, blue and purple foods until you account for all colours of the gay pride rainbow. Hang big pictures of famous advocates of gay rights and print out large dates of momentous days in the history of gay rights. For example, the overturning of proposition eight on Aug. 4, 2010 in California was a particularly momentous day.

Literary Gay Figures

Gay writers have made some of the most outstanding contributions to literature. Honour these writers by having a party that pays tribute to gay writers like Lord Byron, Walt Whitman, Oscar Wilde, Marcel Proust, Gertrude Stein, Virginia Woolf, Tennessee Williams, Herman Melville, Willa Cather and Langston Hughes. Aside from hanging large pictures of these people around the room, print out and blow up large excerpts of their work to hang as decorations. For some of these writers, recordings of their voices are available. Consider having guests take turns reading from some of their famous or lesser known works.

Gay Entertainers

While people are aware of the contributions that lesbians and gays have made to the field of entertainment, many may not be aware of how enormous that contribution is. Choosing such a theme can truly make for a dynamic, vibrant party. Famous homosexual performers include Cole Porter, Janis Joplin, Rudolf Nuryev, Montgomery Clift, James Dean, Tracy Chapman and Elton John. Play music by these talented individuals or run clips from their films. Consider hiring famous impersonators to perform and keep the energy up. Have a karaoke machine so that people can take turns singing hits from various gay singers.
