Nurses make our lives easier. They assist us in so many ways during doctor's appointments and hospital stays. They ease discomfort, administer shots, fluff pillows, change sheets and help us start moving around after surgery. Many nurses offer a word of comfort and a listening ear. Whether a nurse is a relative, friend or someone who has comforted you in a time of distress, sometimes a gift specific to the nursing profession is appropriate.

Bedpan Flower Pot
A bedpan is definitely a symbol of nursing. While bedpans aren't usually one of the better memories of a hospital stay, some nurses manage to assist patients while still allowing the patient to keep dignity intact. A bedpan can even make a funny, unique gift.
Take a bedpan and either leave it as is or spray paint it. Black paint provides this flower pot a more formal appearance. Using a bright colour for the bedpan gives the gift a fun look. After the paint dries, turn the bedpan into a flower pot. Add a layer of larger gravel, then smaller gravel before adding potting mix. If you are in a hurry to present the gift, add a selection of plant or flower seed packets, wrap and present. However, if you don't mind a time lapse, plant flowers or whatever you think might be appreciated and wait for the plants to grow and/or flower. Present the bedpan with grown plants. Be sure to include instructions for plant care.
Personal Prescription pads
A personal prescription pad makes a cute and useful gift for a nurse. These can be created a couple of ways.
The simpler way is to use an online or local copy service. Have them print a message on the personal prescription pad. Include the nurse's name at the top followed by “Prescription: Hugs for One Special Nurse” or another nurse-related message. Include a nursing symbol. The copy service will print out as many of your pads as you want to present as a thank you or other gift for that special nurse.
Another way is to buy small blank tablets. If not artistic, purchase a stamp with a medical symbol. To each page, add a prescription of inspiration or encouragement using sayings, quotes or scripture. Examples include, “Today's prescription: Remember to take time to relax,” and “Today's prescription: Remember how special you are."
Add a card with a note of thanks or reason for the gift.
Pill Bottle Vase
Gather four or five empty pill bottles. To use this as a cute gift for a nurse, don't bother removing labels. Take a CD or DVD you no longer use. Remove or cover any label. Make sure one side has no label. With the mirror-like side up, glue the pill bottles in a circle around the middle. Make sure they are stable and secure. Purchase some smaller but full artificial flowers and arrange them in the pill bottles until the arrangement has a unified appearance. Tie a ribbon around the arranged pill bottles.
Present to the nurse you wish to thank or honour.
