If you know someone who is moving to a new city, give a gift that will bring back memories of the place that's been left behind. In addition, help celebrate the next step in the journey and give encouraging support in an unfamiliar place. Personalise the present to your friend's interests, hobbies, prior town and new home.

Home Sweet Dorm Kit

Assemble a simple "Home Sweet Dorm" kit for a first-year college student. Buy a plastic storage bin and stock it with dorm room essentials. Don't forget to include items that will help the young adult remember what is being left behind at home. Some ideas include a soft blanket in the colours of the student's new school, a framed photograph of friends, a bottle of lotion and body spray in a favourite fragrance and snacks that come only from home, such as iced tea bags to make southern sweet tea or your dark chocolate brownies. This is a creative gift and has a lot of range, so fill your bin with the essentials that another will appreciate.

Welcome Plant

Give a friend who is leaving your city a goodbye/welcome plant. If transporting it will be an issue, then put together a plant kit. Purchase a ceramic pot in a bold colour, a spade and a packet of flower seeds. After the seeds are planted and the buds bloom, the potted plant may be placed on the new front stoop as a reminder of you and the city left behind. Consider giving seeds of your state's official flower if the move is far.

Welcome Home Bucket for Kids

Fill plastic beach buckets with items for children who are adjusting to a new home environment. Include snacks and activities that are appropriate for the ages of the children, like puzzles, video games, DVDs, markers, crayons, colouring books, candy, fruit and disposable cameras to take photos during the road trip and upon arrival to the new city.
