These non-profit organisations often help those in need by paying for necessities such as rent, heating, water and electricity bills and offer referrals to agencies that can provide continuing assistance.

Founded in 1998, The Access Project (TAP) is a non-profit organisation that helps people pay mounting medical bills. According to its website, The Access Project's goal is to improve health care, strengthen community action, and help promote social change for those who are struggling and in need of assistance. The Access Project's Medical Debt Resolution Program offers financial help to those who are in need of help with paying for medical bills and related debt.
