In a home a brick wall can provide a focal point for a room; the lines of the bricks and the deep colour make a dramatic statement. Whether you are building your own brick wall or working with an existing wall, the choice of design and decor can set the tone of the room. To get the greatest impact out of your brick wall, choose design elements that make the most of the colours and textures of the bricks.

Picture Frames

When you want to include a brick wall in your room design scheme, use picture frames. If you want to create a contemporary, stylish look, use black frames paired with black and white photos; the contrast between the red bricks and the black frame will add a touch of drama to the room. In a home with a more traditional feeling, you can use natural wooden frames for a warmer, more comfortable look. Choose wood that has slight reddish undertones to bring in the colours of the bricks. The large rectangular frames will create a visually appealing geometric appearance when combined with the smaller brick pattern.

On a red brick wall, light can cast a range of shadows that make the most of the texture and colours in the brick. If you want to modify the wall, mount sconces directly onto the bricks; alternately, go with small lamps or candles placed on shelves or side tables. Choose soft, low-wattage bulbs for a gentle glow. When placed next to the brick wall, the lights will make the most of the natural tones and create a warm glow in your room.

Built-in Arch

When you are installing a brick wall in a bedroom, a built-in arch can make a strong design statement. Plan the arch so that your bed can fit in the inside of the arch; it will then take the place of a headboard. You can also use an arch in a living room or around a fireplace or window where it can act as a frame and a focal point. Choose an arch style that matches the rest of the house construction so that it looks like an original architectural detail.

Circular Art

The main attraction on a brick wall is often the colours and patterns of the bricks themselves. If you have a wide expanse of wall, however, a simple piece of circular art can break up the space and provide an interesting geometric contrast. You might hang a circular mirror, for example, or find a spherical frame. If you can find a piece of metal artwork made out of wrought iron, the simplicity of line and the texture of the material will work well with the texture and colour of the bricks.
