Ideas on Decorating Christmas Trees

Choose a theme for your Christmas tree to make decorating it easier. The theme can be anything: colours, objects, people or any other festive ideas you can think of. For example, pair blue and white together. Use clear and blue lights with white and blue ornaments. Choose a Christmas tree theme that will be easy to add to each year.

Snowflake decorations are easy to pair with blue or silver ornaments. Snowflakes are easy to find in the weeks leading up to the Christmas holiday. Keep the snowflake theme with the tree topper and skirt. Use a basic colour for the skirt and topper. These final additions pull the look of the tree together.

Candy Ornaments

Use ornaments shaped like candy canes and old-fashioned candies with glass bulbs. Because candy ornaments are bright, any type of lights work for this theme. Add rope lights for a twist on traditional bulbs. Use a simple tree topper and skirt to avoid distracting from the decorations on the tree itself.

Decorate your tree to look like the movies. Novelty stores and greeting card shops sell ornaments that have movie themes. These usually cost more than traditional ornaments. To give the tree a glamorous Hollywood look use gold twinkling lights, a gold coloured skirt and a gold star on the tree. The ornaments can be from any combination of movies. Hang popcorn and star ornaments to accent the tree.

For a more natural look use animal shaped ornaments like birds, deer and rabbits. Hang ornaments made from wood and other materials from nature. Use clear lights, but don’t use too many. Candle shaped lights and a simple star and skirt add a more traditional look to this Christmas tree theme.

Combine the colours of the holiday season to make a theme. Some examples are red and green, blue and silver or blue and green. Make all the ornaments the chosen colours. If you want to add a little variation, use one strand of white lights with strands of coloured. Finding a lighted star for the tree with the exact colour combination may be difficult. If possible replace the lights in the star with bulbs to match your theme.

Use all homemade ornaments on your tree. The ornaments can be made from anything. This is a good decorating theme that children can help create. Use any type of lights and star. Make the tree skirt from fabric and decorate it with painted handprints (use fabric paint) from each member of the family.
