The Best Products to Fade Brown Skin Spots

Updated April 17, 2017

Brown spots, also known as liver or sun spots, are patches of pigmented skin that usually appear on the face, neck, arms and hands. The cause of this condition is a combination of sun damage, which increases melanin production, and ageing, which weakens the body's ability to fend off the effects of the sun's ultraviolet rays. Many products can help fade these spots. For best results, the product must be able to block the production of melanin and increase cell turnover rate.

Home Remedies

Applying pure lemon juice to skin spots can help to lighten their appearance. This method may take longer than using manufactured anti-ageing skin cream, but the spots can eventually be erased by using natural ingredients, not man-made chemicals.

Orange peelings can be used as another home remedy to fade the spots. Dry the peelings in the sun then grind them into a fine powder. Mix this with milk to make a paste which is then applied to the affected skin areas. The paste should stay on the skin until it is dry; it can then be washed off with lukewarm water.

Buttermilk mixed with lemon essential oil can bring about effective results. Mix one tablespoon of buttermilk with the oil and dab the mixture on the affected skin area twice a day.

Hydroquinone is a good topical formula for brown spots. This ingredient does not bleach the skin but prevents the production of extra melanin which causes the spots to appear. When the overproduction of melanin stops, newly formed skin cells can reach the surface appearing as faded spots. Products which contain this ingredient include Esoterica and Palmer's Skin Success fade creams.

Prescription-strength hydroquinone products, including Melanex and Eldoquin, may work faster than over-the-counter creams and can erase larger more stubborn brown areas. Retin-A which comes in cream or gel form is another potential age spot eraser which also revitalises the skin to its normal state.

OlayTotal Effects 7 in 1 Anti-Aging Moisturiser contains chemicals that help speed up the skin's natural cell turnover rate, potentially helping to erase skin spots. Using a night lotion before going to bed, such as Olay Regenerist Night Recovery Moisturising Treatment, can help keep the skin hydrated all day and night helping to fade the skin spots.

Wearing sunscreen every day is very important in the prevention of further skin discolourations. Besides protecting your skin from harmful UVA and UVB rays, suncreen can also prevent future brown spots from developing and help to erase them more quickly. Sunscreen is an important component in age spot treatment. Without it, your skin will continue to show brown spots. The type of remedy you may use will have little or no affect in clearing up areas of the skin already affected.
