A little bird popping out a house and a distinct sound come to mind when most people think of a cuckoo. Children can make their very own cuckoo clocks and cuckoo birds with simple craft materials. Use paper, clay, wood and paint to create your very own cuckoo friend.
Paper Cuckoo Clock
Make you own cuckoo clock by attaching a construction paper triangle roof to the top of a construction paper trapezoid. The bird house should be smaller at the bottom and wider at the top. Cut a rectangle out of the top middle of the clock. Draw, colour and cut-out a cuckoo bird to fit into the rectangle and glue it in the opening. Draw the numbers for the face of a clock on a paper circle, add clock hands with a braid and attach to the front of the clock.
Wooden Cuckoo Clock
Use an unfinished wooden birdhouse as the base of a cuckoo bird clock craft. Paint or stain the house any colour that you wish. Glue overlapping layers of coloured Popsicle sticks to the roof to create the appearance of shingles. Create a clock face out of a cardstock circle and glue onto the birdhouse. Attach cord or chains to the bottom of the house. Attach beads to the bottom of the cording. Make a paper or clay cuckoo bird to sitting inside the birdhouse hole on the front.
Clay Cuckoo Bird
Create a pear shaped figure using clay. The top smaller portion will be the bird's head. Attach two flat semicircle pieces to each side the pear to resemble wings. Attach a flat triangular shape to the back for a tail. Make a sharp downward turning beak to attach the face. After drying, paint the bird with shades of grey; the stomach and head are lighter shades. The wings are the darkest. Paint the eyes and beak yellow.
Cut-out bird body parts from tag bard or card stock. Make a head, body, wings, tail and beak. Children can trace the pieces, cut them out and glue them together to make their own cuckoo bird. Use markers, paint or construction paper to decorate.
