A double-size bed is commonly referred to in the bedding market as full size. In your search for bedding, research the full size to learn more about the double-size bed. In the United States and in the U.K., the dimensions of a full-size bed are the same. In terms of inches, the dimensions for the full, or double size, are 54 by 75. This bed size is recommended for one average size adult or two small adults.

Compared to Twin

Dimensions of twin beds in the United States are 39 by 75 inches. This is also the standard size for the bunk bed. The full size bed is 15 inches wider than this twin size, making it difficult to accommodate two adults on a twin. While the full size is recommended for one adult, the twin size is recommended for one child. The U.K. twin size differs slightly. It is even narrower: only 36 inches wide.

Compared to XL Twin

The "XL" stands for extra long in the case of bedding. The XL twin is 39 by 76 inches. This is an inch longer than both the twin and full-size beds. When buying sheets and other bedding for the XL twin, be sure to buy the proper size. Twin and full-size bedding will be too short for it. The U.K. does not have a bed size comparable to the U.S.'s XL twin.

Compared to Queen

The standard queen-size bed in the U.S. is 60 by 80 inches. It is 4 inches wider and 5 inches longer than a standard full-size bed. Comforters, then, that are listed as full/queen size will not drape as far over the sides and bottom of a queen bed. The added width and length make the queen-size bed a popular choice for couples. The U.K. does not have a queen-size bed equivalent.

Compared to King

The standard king-size bed in the United States is 76 by 80 inches. The additional 22 inches in width and 5 inches in length make it seem monstrous in comparison to the full-size bed. This size accommodates larger adults who prefer the added width and extra length. The king size standard in the U.K is smaller, 60 by 78 inches. Despite being smaller than the American queen size, it is larger than the full-size bed.
