Homer Simpson Costume Ideas

Homer Simpson is the fallible father of the Simpson family, the central characters of the cartoon series "The Simpsons." At the time of publication, "The Simpsons" was in the midst of its 23rd season, making it the longest-running comedy series in television history. Homer Simpson, along with the rest of the main characters, are popular culture icons. That makes Homer Simpson an excellent choice for a Halloween costume.

Although the simplest approach for the face of a Homer Simpson costume is buying a mask, make-up can be used to create the Homer Simpson look. If you have hair, get a baldhead wig (a wig cap underneath is recommended) and use latex-safe make-up or paint to make it yellow. Use dark brown or black make-up to outline the mouth area and the eyes. You want an area roughly the shape of a goatee around the mouth and chin and two large sections for the eyes. Fill the mouth area with a brownish make-up and the eyes with white. Do the rest of the face in yellow.

For a person with a large belly, a white polo shirt creates the proper Homer Simpson look. A thin person, though, will need to get a larger shirt and use a belt or suspenders underneath to hold a pillow or some foam rubber to get the Homer Simpson appearance right. Blue dress trousers, or even dark blue jeans, can be used for Homer's trousers. Brown dress shoes present the final piece of the clothing puzzle.

Homer Simpson's hands and arms should be yellow, just like his face. One way to accomplish that is with make-up. Another approach would be to wear a tight yellow sweatshirt or long-sleeve T-shirt and yellow gloves under the polo shirt. Cans of Duff Beer make great accessories. Sleeves can be printed either by printing the image from the cartoon or by making it from scratch. Place beer or soda cans in the sleeves to create Duff Beer. Alternately, use cardboard tubes covered with the labels.

Other Ideas

A more obscure way to do Homer Simpson is to copy a live-action introduction that was filmed in England. While it might require some explanations, the costume is basically the same, except that no yellow make-up is required. Instead, a mostly bald look with just a little bit of hair can complete the picture. Another idea is to wear a yellow radiation suit. One might be found in a Halloween store. Wearing the suit as the clothing and carrying the helmet, with the Homer face exposed, will create an "at work" Homer.
