The next time you eat pistachios, consider using the shells for a craft project. The light colour of pistachio shells allows them to absorb paint well, and their uniform shape makes it possible to stack and layer them. Because of their small sizes, you can craft them into gifts and decorations that do not take up a great deal of space. The versatility of pistachio shells as a craft item allows the person using them to explore his creativity.

Mural

Clean and dry pistachio shells whenever using them for a craft. Always use acrylic paint, as this material imparts a deep colour to pistachio shells. Use a hot glue gun to attach the shells to different items since this glue dries clear and is durable. Choose a design that you wish to create with pistachio shells. You can recreate an existing image or experiment with different shapes and colours. Break pistachio shells into halves. Begin with about 50 pieces. Decide which colours your mural will need and divide the shells into groups. Paint each group a different colour. Allow the shells to dry and glue them on a piece of stiff paper or cardboard. Once the glue has solidified, you can hang the mural on a wall.

Ornament

Create an ornament to hang on your Christmas tree, decorate your home or give as a gift. Obtain 10 whole pistachio shells. Remove the nuts without breaking the shells apart. Often, a bag of pistachios will contain many open whole shells from which nuts have already fallen. Paint these shells green and allow the paint to dry. Glue the pistachio shells together in the shape of a circle. Arrange them with the end that splits into an opening facing outward. Tie a piece of string around one of the shells so that you can hang the ornament. Trim your miniature wreath with a piece of ribbon, if desired.

Pin

Create a decorative pin that resembles a flower from pistachio shells. Begin with about 20 half pieces. Paint the shells bright floral colours. Cut out a circle of lightweight cardboard. The circle should be the size that you want your pin to be. Glue the shells to one another in a circular pattern. Start with an initial bundle of shells and attach them at the base. Glue this bundle of shells to the cardboard circle. The shells should be standing upright and positioned so that they cup inward. Attach an outer layer of shells to the first clump. Position the shells so that they resemble the petals of a flower, and build outwards until you are satisfied with the size of the pin. Glue a safety pin to the back of the cardboard base using a hot glue gun. This pin can be attached to clothing or purses.

Bracelet

Cut a strip of strip of fabric that is about 3/4 inch wide and long enough to loop over your hand. Wash and dry about 10 pistachio shells and paint them whatever colour you desire. Line the shells up along the fabric. You can arrange them end-to-end or side-by-side. Glue them in place. Once the glue dries, sew the ends of the fabric strip together. Slip over your hand and wear as a bracelet.
