Handwritten letters always provide an old, romantic touch, especially if e-mail is your preferred method of communication. (Brand X Pictures/Brand X Pictures/Getty Images)

No matter how long you've been dating your girlfriend, sweet letters are never out of place. Ideally, they work best when you write them randomly for no special reason as opposed to just when it's a romantic holiday or you are in trouble. There are a couple of ways to go about it, and the good news is that it's the thought and effort that counts; you don't necessarily need the articulation skills of a romance novel writer.

Poetry

Poetry is always romantic, even if you aren't the best at it. Simply give it a go; say what you feel, and make the words rhyme. You don't necessarily have to write a long poem either. You can either write a short poem and call it good or you can opt for incorporating it into a letter of prose. For example, a short poem is a great way to end a sweet letter, and length for either isn't important.

Card

Romantic cards for your girlfriend are perfect for those of you who find it hard to get the ball rolling, creatively. The key is to be honest about how you feel and not be self conscious about being either corny or sappy. If you choose the former, consider a humour card that emphasises an inside joke that you share.

Reasons for Love

"I love you because" letters are beautiful in their sincerity and simplicity. You can make the letter as short or long as you wish, as long as you speak from the heart. Not that it's a bad thing to write such sentiments on Valentine's Day, but this particular way to write a sweet letter works exceptionally well when it's given to her randomly, especially after she's had a long day.

Handwritten

Nothing hearkens back to classic romance more than a handwritten letter delivered through the mail. These work especially well when you find yourselves separated for any significant amount of time. Choose a classy, retro stationery. For an added touch, lightly spray the letter with a hint of the cologne you wear. Cursive writing helps, but it's not absolutely necessary.
