Brown spots on your skin are often caused by excessive sun radiation and cause years of frustration as you try to find something that gets rid of them. Brown spots on your skin, also known as hyper pigmentation, may not go away completely but several over-the-counter products can lighten the spots and give you more confidence.

Exfoliating your skin is important to keep it looking clean and healthy. When you have brown spots due to hyper pigmentation, exfoliating your skin on a regular basis may help to lessen the effects of this condition by scrubbing away the dead skin cells on your skin. The healthier your skin, the less likely you are to develop more brown spots from sun damage or other causes.

Lightening Face Cream

Lightening face creams are available over-the-counter to lighten your skin as well as the brown spots on your skin. Look for a face cream with the ingredient hydroquinone; this helps to bleach and lighten the brown spots on your skin. Not only do the brown spots lighten, but so do any other imperfections on your skin you may not like, such as freckles. Allow three to six weeks for the face cream to take full effect and notice a difference.

Age Spot Creams

Skin creams, meant for age spots, work well on brown spots from hyperpigmentation, as these creams often contain many different skin lightening and bleaching ingredients. Look for an age spot cream with celazome, comacare or the agent hydroquinone. Use the age spot cream ads directed on the bottle for age spots and brown spots associated with extensive sun exposure from sunbathing or tanning.

Homemade Masks

Make a homemade mask using typical, over-the-counter ingredients to lighten and bleach the imperfections in your skin, including brown spots and other pigmentation problems. Lemon juice works well for lightening skin tone. Mix together a few chopped pieces of boiled and strained parsley and about five drops of lemon juice. Use a cotton ball to apply this mask to your skin. The product can be left on your face until the next time it is washed -- preferably overnight.

A majority of skin pigmentation issues are a result of sun exposure. Every time you are out in the sun, you expose your skin to the dangerous UV radiation from the sun. Over time, this may cause discolouration, hyperpigmentation and, more seriously, skin cancer. Always wear sunscreen when you plan to be outdoors, even in the colder months when you think you have no threat of sun damage.
