Dressing up in costume contributes much of the fun of Halloween for children and adults. It is a way to become larger than life, even if just for one night. Superhero costumes certainly play on that desire. There are options when it comes to superhero costumes, but some elements are constant throughout many costumes. Whether recreating a comic book or movie superhero, making up an original character or spoofing the whole superhero concept, incorporating the right elements is necessary for success.
With very few exceptions (Superman being the most notable) superheroes wear masks. The style of mask varies widely. Heroes like Robin and Green Lantern wear just an eye mask. Spiderman and Daredevil have masks that cover the whole face, while Captain America and Batman fall in between with their mouths uncovered. Iron Man's costume features a helmet.
The vast majority of superheroes wear boots, generally made of black leather or made of some type of coloured material. The boots tend to be sturdy enough to handle whatever adventures the superhero encounters.
Perhaps the first thing that comes to mind when envisioning a superhero costume is a cape. That said, capes are common, but not universal. Sure, Superman, Batman and Thor all wear capes. There are many heroes without them, though, including Spiderman, Daredevil, Captain America and Iron Man. When creating an original superhero character, a cape is likely to help sell the suit as a superhero, but it's not mandatory.
Gloves are common superhero accessories, but many heroes have glove-free hands. Generally gloves should be in a colour that accentuates a colour presented elsewhere in the costume. Leather or similar material is good, but spandex or even silk could be used. Other accessories common to superheroes include belts and weapons and shields. Jewellery like a ring of power (Green Lantern and super-villain Mandarin are two examples) or an amulet (Doctor Strange) or bracelets (Wonder Woman) can also be effective.
