What Email Clients Will Work With the BlackBerry?

Each BlackBerry phone plan includes a free push e-mail address that will display e-mails sent from standard desktop computers within as little as five seconds. These free e-mail addresses are in the standard YourName@carrier.blackberry.net format. A number of third-party e-mail clients function independently of the BlackBerry Messages Inbox. These third-party clients provide the BlackBerry with a separate Inbox so that users can separate their personal and business e-mail accounts.

BBSmart Email Viewer

BBSmart Email Viewer is a third-party e-mail client designed for the BlackBerry. BBSmart allows users to view HTML e-mail, including images, smileys and hyperlinks. Fully customisable, users are able to change background colour, as well as font size, style and colour. Additional functionality includes task management and calendar on operating system 4.2 and above. Users are also able to tag e-mails with SmartNotes and use advanced e-mail templates. E-mail templating, referred to as "SmartSay," allows users to save things that include e-mail signatures, phone numbers, e-mail addresses for automatic insertion into e-mails. The main improvement sought by BBSmart users is enhancing the speed of the program. Program updates are available free for registered users.

Empower Email Viewer

Empower Email Viewer is an alternative e-mail client for BlackBerry users. The professional version of Empower has most of the same features as the BBSmart Email Viewer. While speed is not a complaint of Empower users, this e-mail client is more unreliable when opening large e-mails with a large number of images.

LogicMail IMAP

LogicMail, a third party open source default e-mail client, is designed as an alternative "push" e-mail system to that supplied with the standard BlackBerry e-mail service. LogicMail supports IMAP and POP, and functions as a standard e-mail client, bypassing the default BlackBerry Enterprise Server and BlackBerry Internet Service e-mail servers. It is popular with BlackBerry users who do not have a data plan. The IMAP configuration also allows users more control over speed and bandwidth.

Gmail Mobile

The Google Apps Connector for BES synchronises Email, Calendar and Contacts applications on BlackBerry devices with Google applications, including the desktop Gmail interface. The Google Sync application also provides synchronisation between Google Apps, and the BlackBerry Calendar and Contacts applications. With similar functionality to Google web applications, Gmail mobile applications enable access to multiple Gmail accounts within its application.
