Why Water Stays in the Bottom of Whirlpool Dishwashers

The Whirlpool Corporation, a Fortune 500 company, is headquartered in Benton Charter Township, Michigan, and specialises in consumer appliances, including dishwashers. The company sells built-in and portable dishwashers with wheels. A common issue with these dishwashers is that water doesn't fully pump out of the tub. If you do experience this problem, troubleshoot and repair the problem to eliminate service fees.

Normal Operation

Your Whirlpool dishwasher normally has a little bit of water left on the bottom of the tub after the cycle is complete. This prevents the seals from drying out. If you see a lot of water, verify that the cycle is actually complete. Your dishwasher normally pauses between cycles. Close the dishwasher door, and restart the cycle if it isn't finished.

Drain Hoses

If your Whirlpool dishwasher isn't pumping water out at the end of the cycle, check the drain hose, which is connected to the back of the dishwasher. Remove the hose from both the household drain and the dishwasher. Look into the hose with a flashlight, and see if it's clogged. Clean out the hose with a plastic utensil, or place it under running water. Straighten the hose if kinked, or replace it if it's badly crushed. If you don't have an air gap, install a high drain loop under your countertop. This prevents water from the sink from flowing into the dishwasher.

Check Valve/Air Gap

The check valve is inside the drain line port. This valve opens up to let water into the drainage hose, but doesn't let water back into the tub. If the valve is clogged, you must clean it out. Remove any items preventing the valve from closing. Check the air gap, which is located near the sink. This component has a cap over it. Open the cap, and look into it. Dig out any clogs with a plastic utensil.

Pump/Food Waste Disposer

The drain pump pushes the water out of the tub. It is located under the spray arm and bottom rack. This component can also get clogged with food. Clean it with a toothpick. Examine the pump, and see if the impeller or pump components are broken. You must replace the pump since it's difficult to fix. Run the food waste disposer if it's connected to your Whirlpool dishwasher. If you just installed the disposer, remove the knockout plug.

Additional Components

Your dishwasher has filters on the bottom of the tub. These can get dirty. Remove them from the dishwasher, and place them under running water to clean them. If you haven't used the dishwasher in a while, the motor may be stuck. Disconnect the dishwasher from the power supply, and open up the housing. Spin the motor until it moves freely. Check your household drains for clogs. If they are clogged, water can back up into your dishwasher. Use plumbing cleaning products or tools to clear the clogs.
