Children enjoy making crafts and working with their hands. Crafting with ceramic plates is an ideal activity for older children. A cost-effective medium, ceramics have long been used throughout the centuries by artists and craftsmen alike. There are several types of crafts that can be made from, or embedded onto, ceramic plates. Glazes and ceramic paints and come in a variety of colours and adhere very well to ceramic plates.

Ceramic plates are wonderful keepsakes for younger children and babies. Often a personalised ceramic keepsake plate will be presented to an expectant mother at a baby shower, or to parents immediately after the birth of a child. If a child has a new baby sibling or cousin, crafting a ceramic plate keepsake is a wonderful way to give a memorable gift to a baby. Encourage your child to draw pictures, and maybe even add plastic jewels or other decorations to the plate. Additionally, painting the baby's name on a plate with ceramic paints will allow the child to personalise the gift.

Wall Hangings

Older children can create a ceramic plate wall hangings for themselves or an adult family member. They may decide to work around a theme, and to present the plate as a gift. Ceramic plate wall hangings can be used in every room of the home, however, they are particularly appropriate in dining rooms and kitchens. If your child has communicated with you who they are crafting the wall hanging for, perhaps they can work with the colour scheme already established in that room while doing their craft.

Dessert Plate

If your child has a sweet tooth, crafting a dessert plate from scratch can be a special ceramic plate craft project for the child. The sky's the limit with the theme, images, and colours your child can work with to create their ceramic dessert plate. A floral theme would go well with afternoon tea cakes. Painting little pieces of candy, slices of pie and large chocolate doughnuts will serve to remind the user that it's dessert time. Pay special attention to the ceramic paints that you allow your child to use while crafting this type of plate. You'll want to ensure that the paint you use is non-toxic, and that the plate is not used until the paint completely dries and the ceramic plate has been fired in a pottery of oven.

Picture Frame

If you or your child has a room full of framed photos, consider crafting a ceramic plate picture frame. Depending on the look the child is going for, and the method they want to use, the child can superimpose a photo onto a ceramic plate, by sending the plate out to a capable photography studio. Another option is to take photos, make copies of them and attach them to ceramic plate with adhesive. Plain white ceramic plates work well with this theme. The plates can hang on the wall as a focal point in a room. Their unique frames will not only highlight the picture, but also the craftsmen who created them.
