While the romance is still fresh and fun, the first anniversary is one of the most celebrated relationship milestones. In 1922, Emily Post published the first list of traditional wedding anniversary gifts. Her categories were simple, versatile and allowed for inexpensive yet meaningful gifts. Still honoured today, Post's anniversary gift categories make it easy to find a thoughtful way to convey your love and appreciation for your partner on your first anniversary.

Paper is the traditional first anniversary gift. If your career is not yet established and you're trying to keep costs down, consider a handwritten love letter on nice stationery or make a book of homemade "love coupons." These gifts allow you to express your devotion without breaking the bank. Other paper gift ideas include a journal, a favourite book or a magazine subscription. Explore your artistic side and paint a picture or create a paper craft, such as origami art. Give a more sentimental gift, such as a framed portrait, photo album filled with special pictures or a scrapbook of memories. For a more elaborate gift, surprise your partner with tickets to a concert or sporting event.

The modern first anniversary gift is the clock. Consider your partner's personality to select the most memorable clock gift. If she likes to wear jewellery, a wristwatch or pocket watch gift will likely be a memorable choice. If he likes fancy vintage decor, look in thrift stores or search online for an antique or mid-century wall clock. Perhaps your partner is a technology aficionado -- consider a shower clock, self-setting alarm clock or a natural light wake-up clock. Or, for the more sentimental person, purchase a personalised clock, emblazoned with your wedding date and last name or a memorable saying.

Traditionally, the pansy is the flower of the first anniversary. If it is in season, purchase a small pot of pansies in your partner's favourite colour. Otherwise, consider a decoration, such as a wreath or floral arrangement, that uses silk pansies. Pressed and frame pansies could make a lovely decoration as well. For a memorable occasion, set up a picnic lunch or dinner near a pansy garden, or use potted pansies as the centrepiece for a romantic dinner at home.

The first anniversary gemstone is the freshwater pearl. Like paper, freshwater pearls are not too expensive yet make for a beautiful, thoughtful gift. Purchase a pair of pearl earrings or a freshwater pearl necklace or bracelet if your female partner enjoys wearing jewellery. Or, for the man in your life, consider pearl cuff links. Pearls make a simple yet elegant addition to any wardrobe.
