Free things for your birthday

Updated April 07, 2017

With a number of companies rewarding you for simply being born, there's no reason not to take advantage of freebies on your birthday. You will likely need to sign up for a membership or birthday club, usually free to do, to get your deal. Whether it's food, samples and coupons or a birthday card, revel in freebies designed to make you feel special.

Ice Cream

Sign up with Baskin-Robbins, Stone Cold Creamery and Carvel to receive either a free cone on your birthday or coupon for a free treat during the weeks adjacent to your birthday. At Ben and Jerry's and TCBY, club members get a free scoop or dish on their birthday plus a discount coupon for an ice cream cake. You can find forms for each company's birthday clubs in one of their shops or sign up through their websites.

National and regional chains and local restaurants offer birthday guests a variety of free food for coming in on their birthdays. From appetizers to desserts to full meals, restaurants want to entice you to celebrate with them. Applebee's, BJ's, The Ram Brewery and the Hard Rock Cafe all treat you to free dessert. Ruby Tuesday, Steak and Shake and Taco Del Mar give free entrées to birthday guests. Call your favourite restaurant before going to see if it offers a special birthday freebie; most require signing up for a loyalty membership.

Holders of a registered Starbucks Coffee Card receive a free coffee on their birthday, while Barnes and Noble Cafes and Borders offer a free coffee or tea when you show your ID and rewards card. You can also get a free birthday coffee to go with your doughnut at Dunkin' Donuts. Keva Juice will send you a coupon for a free smoothie and Arby's offers a free milkshake on your birthday.

Retail Freebies

Each year, Sephora chooses a unique birthday freebie for its Beauty Insider participants. The gifts range from bath salts to cosmetics to accessories. Aveda offers a uniquely blended perfume sample. Hallmark gives you a free birthday card and, for kids, Toys R Us will send a birthday letter in the mail. Check with your local bowling alley, as many offer one free game on your birthday. Kmart gives kids who are part of their birthday club £3 Birthday Bucks and an activity pack.
