In the 9th grade, students are beginning to learn about advanced concepts in the natural sciences. Science at this level involves advanced theories and concepts, in contrast to middle school science, which mostly deals with basic facts and ideas. 9th grade science projects should deal with the theoretical material of high school science in a novel and interesting way.

Physics

Physics deals with questions of space, time, matter and energy. At the 9th grade level, physics deals with concepts relating to motion, energy and gravity. Students may begin to study theories like classical mechanics and relativity in this grade. 9th grade science projects in physics should test and analyse these theories and concepts. Examples include signal transmission/reception, electrical conductivity, and magnet polarity.

Chemistry

Chemistry deals with questions of matter's composition and properties. Chemists study atoms, molecules and chemical reactions. At the 9th grade level, students typically investigate the Periodic Table of Elements, and may begin to learn about equations governing chemical reactions. 9th grade projects in chemistry should deal with matter and its many properties. Examples include measuring pH levels in lakes, testing the durability of metals, and combining substances to produce reactions.

Biology

Biology studies questions relating to life and nature. Biology deals with topics like ecosystems, cell biology and evolution. At the 9th grade level, students begin to learn about biological theories like evolution, taxonomy and genetics. 9th grade science projects in biology should deal with these concepts through experiments and/or observation. Examples include measuring plant growth, assessing the effect of music on plants, and recording the rate of bacterial growth on old food.

Earth Science

Earth science looks at questions relating to Earth's history and characteristics. Earth science contains many subfields, such as meteorology, palaeontology and geology. At the 9th grade level, students are expected to understand concepts relating to weather, climate and plate tectonics. Examples of science projects on these topics include temperature measurement, wind velocity measurement, and soil composition analysis.

Applied Science

Applied science puts scientific theories to use toward practical problems. Applied science is used in engineering, biotechnology and medicine. At the 9th grade level, students are expected to know some of the basic uses of science in day-to-day life. A good 9th grade science project on this topic would use science to achieve a practical goal or objective. Examples include building a robot, evaluating the effectiveness of different insulators, and testing the carrying capacity of model bridges.
