The 6 series and 8 series of televisions from Samsung represent two different tiers of the same range of products. Broadly speaking the TV sets in the 6 series are cheaper and offer fewer features than those in the 8 series, though there are many similarities between the two groups of products as well. The benefits of the Series 8 sets include improved image processing and the option of a touchscreen remote.

Size and Models

The television sets in Samsung's Series 6 range go from 32" screens to one 75" model. The Series 8 range also tops out with a 75" model, but the smallest Series 8 display is a 40" unit. With 41 different sets available, the Series 6 group offers a greater variety of choice than the Series 8 group, which has 11 different sets on sale (figures as of July 2013).

The built-in features available vary between sets in both the Series 6 and Series 8 ranges, though the Series 8 models typically have better specifications. Compare the 75" top-end model in each range, for example -- the F6400 Series 6 and the F8000 Series 8 -- and you can see that the F8000 offers a higher Clear Motion Rate (1000 vs 200), more powerful sound and additional speakers, a Freesat HD tuner in addition to the Freeview HD one and the option of the AllShare content sharing and screen mirroring feature.

Series 6 and Series 8 models are often available at the same screen sizes and resolutions, but the Series 8 models are typically thinner and lighter -- most of the Series 8 sets are labelled as having a "Super Narrow Bezel Type" to give more room to the screen itself, and the majority of them adopt the "Arc Design" style that means they are very thin front-to-back. The Series 8 range also includes the 65" ES8000 Series 8 SMART 3D Full HD Slim LED TV which is a mere 33.1mm deep.

Electronics prices change on a regular basis, but as of July 2013 the average price of a Series 6 television was £1,276 on the Samsung website (based on 38 different units). The average price of a Series 8 television was £2,791 (based on 11 different units), more than double the amount. The cheapest set is a Series 6 F6100 available for £529.99; the most expensive is a Series 8 F800 available for £6,999.99. This emphasises the premium quality and premium price of the Series 8 sets when compared with the more basic and budget-friendly Series 6 units.
