Function keys help you activate and deactivate features on your laptop more easily, but Acer has included a dedicated button for activating and deactivating your Wi-Fi connection, so you don’t even need to use them. The dedicated key is a time-saver when you understand how to use it, but if you don’t, you might be confused as to why your connection has suddenly dropped out. Finding out about function keys on your Acer Aspire and how you activate and deactivate the Wi-Fi connection ensures you can always connect or disconnect when you need to.

What are function keys?
Function keys are methods of accessing the alternative uses of the main keys on the keyboard. You’ll notice the word “NumLk” on the same key as “F11,” for example, which is the “Function” operation of that key. Similarly, the directional keys can be used to control things like stopping or playing video and audio files. Hold down the “Fn” (function) key as you press the relevant buttons to access these operations. The “Fn” key can be found between the “Ctrl” and “Windows” keys, in the bottom left of the keyboard.
Activating and deactivating Wi-Fi
Locate the “WLAN” (Wi-Fi) key by looking in the top right hand corner of the keyboard, above the dedicated “Num Lock” key and the “/” button above the number-pad. The symbol is a simplistic drawing of a satellite dish, but objectively it looks like a non-descript disc with a small blob to the bottom right of it. This button either activates or deactivates your Wi-Fi connection, depending on the current status. Press the button if you can’t connect to the internet or if you want to cut your connection (to conserve battery life, for example).
WLAN status indicator
Look for the indicator lights on the top left hand corner of the keyboard (next to the power switch) which tell you the status of the connection. If your WLAN is activated, the dedicated symbol will also be illuminated beside the power button. There is also an indicator light for “Num Lock,” so you can activate it and look for the light if you’re struggling to locate them.
Other useful keys
The buttons to the right of the WLAN key are called “Easy-Launch” buttons, and enable you to start programs or activate connections easily. Press the “Bluetooth” symbol to activate and deactivate the laptop’s Bluetooth connection, and use the Saturn icon to open your default internet browser. You can also control things like playing, stopping and skipping tracks with the keys to the left of the WLAN button.
