When you sweat, your body is regulating its temperature. According to the Mayo Clinic, sweating, the main cause of smelly armpits, keeps your skin hydrated and balances the body's electrolytes by excreting excess sodium and calcium. Smelly armpits can be embarrassing and affect your self-esteem. Perspiration is odourless, but when it's attacked by bacteria, an unpleasant smell can emerge. Certain medications, medical conditions, diet, emotional stress and hormonal changes all contribute to sweating and armpit odour. Eliminate unpleasant underarm odour by incorporating natural remedies.

  1. 1

Wash your armpits daily using antibacterial soap and warm water. Scrub your underarms with a washcloth to reduce bacteria build-up. Dry your armpits with a clean towel.

  2. 2

Fill a glass with 236ml of water. Mix 1 tsp of 3 per cent hydrogen peroxide into the water. Dip a washcloth into the solution and apply it to your armpits. Hydrogen peroxide helps kill underarm bacteria. Apply this solution to unbroken skin; avoid applying it after shaving your underarms. Use more hydrogen peroxide if this treatment is ineffective.

  3. 3

Avoid eating spicy foods such as onions, garlic and curry. According to WebMD, these can trigger smelly armpit odour.

  4. 4

Take 30 mg of zinc daily. According to Health 911, zinc reduces body odours dramatically. In addition to supplements, lima beans, chickpeas, and organic beef and turkey are good sources of zinc.

Tips and warnings

  • Shave your armpits regularly. Hairy armpits block the evaporation of sweat, allowing bacteria to build up.
  • Wear loose clothing made from natural fibres, such as silk and cotton, to keep sweating to a minimum.
