How to Make Leather Underwear

Leather underwear is a sexy addition to any lingerie collection but is sometimes difficult to find, especially in the right size. Since leather does not stretch easily, the most flattering leather undergarments have drawstrings that can be adjusted to fit the wearer. Leather underwear is hot and not breathable and so should not be worn on a daily basis. Probably the biggest benefit of using leather is that you do not have to do a special finish to all of the edges like cotton or silk, which can be difficult on small garments.

Untie the drawstrings of your existing bikini bottom and top and lay them flat on the wrong side of the leather. The wrong side is whichever side you want to have touching your skin. So if you want the leather underwear to be shiny, work from the matt side and vice versa.

Trace around the bikini with the fabric chalk. Since you do not need to finish the edges, do not worry about adding seam allowance. However, add one inch to the bottom of the bra triangles to later create a casing for the drawstring.

Cut out the bikini bottom pieces and set the bikini top pieces aside. Still working from the wrong side of the fabric, cut two small X-shaped slits on all four corners. Place a grommet at each slit, following the instructions on the grommet packaging. Most grommets have two pieces, so place one piece on either side of the fabric then secure by lightly hitting it with a hammer until it is flat. Repeat on all corners

Put the leather underwear aside. Cut out the bikini top. Place a grommet on the top tip of each triangle. At the bottom of the bra, fold the leather under one half inch and sew a line one-eighth inch away from the folded edge, creating a casing for the drawstring.

Sew the drawstrings. Cut two 8-inch strips for the bottom and two 36- inch strips for the top. Cut each strip one inch wide. Fold the strips in half and sew 1/4 inch away from the folded edge. Cut away any excess seam allowance.

String one of the top bikini strips through the bottom of both bra triangles until the triangles are near the centre of the strip. String the other long strip through the right side of the bra, around your neck, then through the left side of the bra and back up. Tie behind your neck. Place the two smaller strips through the grommets on the underwear and tie at your hips. Finish the drawstrings with a knot at the end or a small bead for decoration.

Use thin leather as it is easier to sew and will be more comfortable to wear. Change the needle and thread in your sewing machine before sewing the leather to avoid breaking the needle or ripping the thread. Most leathers require a stronger needle to sew than other fabrics.

Do not wear leather underwear on a daily basis as it is not breathable and may cause infection or chaffing.
