CamStudio is a freeware application for capturing single images or video from the Internet. These videos can be used to create video tutorials and presentations. CamStudio outputs to the AVI format, and it cannot directly export animated GIFs based on the footage it captures. However, you can convert the video you create in CamStudio to GIF format using the free Microsoft GIF Animator utility. The process for doing this is quite simple.

Skill level:

  1. 1

Go to the application for which you would like to record video of your actions. Start the CamStudio application.

  2. 2

Select "Options" from the menu, and then click "Video Options." In the dialogue that appears, click inside the "Keyframes" entry and type "1."

  3. 3

Click on the "Record" button and begin performing the actions you want recorded. Click "Stop" when you are done. The program will automatically save a AVI video.

  4. 4

Start the Microsoft GIF Animator. Click on the "Open" icon. Browse to and open the AVI file you saved.

  5. 5

Click on the "Select All" icon at the top. In the entries below, click inside the "Duration" entry and type "100." Click on the "Save" icon. In the dialogue box, click on the "File Type" drop-down menu and choose "GIF" from the listed options." Click "Save."
